Therapy

Carlson Students have ORRS (Ongoing Reviewable Resourcing Scheme) funding that enables them to access therapy services that are on site.

Children receive therapy in a variety of ways in consultation with other members of the team and family: individual sessions, group sessions and ongoing management in the classroom.

Liaison with family and whanau enables therapists to address the needs of  the child and family in an holistic manner.

Therapist work collaboratively with other members of the team to provide equipment, are accredited to apply for appropriate equipment and liaise  closely with other education and health services.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy enables the child to develop life skills that will enhance his/her ability to interact with society and their environment.

Occupational Therapists assess the child in order to develop programmes and adaptations to facilitate self-care, eating, toileting, access to the curriculum, development of fine motor skills, and interpretation of sensory motor input.

Recent innovations in technology have enabled children with disabilities to access computers and communication devices. Occupational Therapists are responsible for assessing children with input from the child's class team to find the best option for accessing these devices.

Occupational Therapists are also responsible for provisional assessment for powered wheelchairs to provide children with independent mobility.

Speech-Language Therapy

Speech-Language Therapists are involved in assessing and providing therapy for children with communication and eating difficulties.

At Carlson we provide a range of therapy based on the child's needs     and in consultation with family and staff.

Language and articulation therapy, augmentative communication,   involving both low tech and voice output communication aids are used.

Speech-Language Therapists also work closely with children who have swallowing difficulties, and their families, offering advice and problem solving in this area. Therapists work with students individually or in   groups providing a wide range  of assessment and therapy in enjoyable sessions with students.

Physiotherapy

The onsite physiotherapists at Carlson believe that each child has the potential for improved function. Students are assessed and a treatment plan is formulated in consultation with the family and school team.

An integrated goal oriented approach is used to encourage increased function and promote access to teaching and learning. We draw our expertise from various approaches to physiotherapy such as the Bobath concept, the Conductive education approach and the MOVE programme.

Students have specific individual or group sessions where they are encouraged to maintain daily practice so learning will occur and they are able to become as independent as possible. There is access to hydrotherapy and a weekly Orthotic Centre clinic.

Our aim is to develop as much independent functional movement as is possible for each student in the most pleasurable way.
